He studied at the AA School, London and as an historian at Liverpool University where he was Leverhulme Fellow in Architecture. He taught at Manchester University before returning to the AA in 1968 as AA General Editor (AA Papers, AA Quarterly (1968-82) and Joint Head of the Arts and History Department.
He taught and examined at the Bartlett School, UCL, Oxford University, Liverpool and Manchester Universities and was visiting professor, Columbia University, NY, Royal University Malta, Adelaide, National University of Mexico, Otaniemi, Finland, and Special Professor at Nottingham University. In 1994 he received a UIA Jean Tschumi Award and in 1993 the Medaille d’argent of the Academiè d’architecture, Paris. He was nominated for the Gold Medal, International Architecture Exposition, Nara. A professor of the IAA he was RIBA Vice President 1991-93. He serves on the AA Council and as Joint Chair, DOCOMOMO UK.
Among his many books is Twentieth Century Architecture: A Visual History (Images 2002). Earlier works include The Picture Palace, The Bauhaus, Glass Architecture, Modern Architecture and Expressionism, Sources of Modern Architecture, The Rationalists, as well as books on Santiago Calatrava, BDP, Manfredi Nicoletti, Kisho Kurokawa. His monograph on Connell, Ward and Lucas is due to be published in 2006.
Executive editor of World Architecture (until 1998) and International Architecture he also contributed widely to international architectural journals and has written for The Guardian and The Independent.
DSA, has worked on buildings, bridges and exhibitions with Santiago Calatrava, the AKAA, Manfredi Nicoletti, Ken Yeang and Kisho Kurokawa and is currently engaged with HOK Sports on the listed buildings at the world famous Ascot Racecourse.
As the Jeffrey Cook Memorial Fellow 2004-5 he lectured at Arizona State University and the University of Manitoba and worked on Prof Cook’s manuscript on The Buildings of Paolo Soleri.
